My Personal Story
After practicing law in New York City for over a decade, I moved with my husband to Boston with our young children. Shortly after the move, our younger son, Matthew, was diagnosed with severe autism. My life plans and professional career came to a screeching halt. With literally no support system in place and a child who was regressing more every day, I became solely responsible for figuring out how to meet Matthew’s substantial educational and therapeutic needs. I felt tremendous pressure to “fix” him as I dealt with managing his challenging behaviors while trying to settle our family into a new home in a new place.
Fast forward several difficult years, when Matthew was in school full-time and I began to have the time and space to think about restarting my own life. I began volunteering at a large human services agency as a member of its Disabilities Advisory Committee, later joined their Board of Directors and ultimately became the Board President. I took a course to become certified as a mediator. Several years after losing my parents, I became trained as a Hospice and Bereavement Volunteer. As the very proud mom of a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I became a mentor for other parents of LGBTQ+ children.
As time went on, I came to understand that using my personal struggles to help others facing challenges was what brought much-needed purpose and meaning to my life. I also realized that, throughout my life, I’ve been a natural coach – someone others have turned to for deep listening, compassion, support and advice. I decided to become trained and certified through Life Purpose Institute as a Life and Relationship coach. My coaching career has brought me tremendous satisfaction and I’m happier now than I’ve ever been.
My experiences with my clients have reinforced what I deeply believe: that, even amidst the most difficult situations, we all have the potential to find fulfillment, gratitude and joy.
